R18 – Mediterotopia / Terræ Acquæ

The Mediterranean Sea is the only territory which holds all the others within, it is the real heterotopia.

Mediterotopia was conceived in 2003 as a dissertation and a research project, and today it still embodies a relevant and necessary call to imagine the Mediterranean as the intersection between earth and sea, a land amid lands, a continent.

The coming together of geography and history gave birth to a unicum. The Mediterranean is a “space-movement” defined by motion; at the same time, it occupies a space inside those who travel across it and spend their lives around it, delineating its limes-limen, and thus ends up becoming an intimate form of geography: identity.

Borders change, “a Greater Mediterranean accompanies the Mediterranean”; multiple layers form relations and create a unique, multifaceted, multicentric, miscellaneous space that is “not only geography”. Different peoples, languages, cultures, ecologies, goods, energy, and information, generate movement; there surfaces a “liquid territory” that “is capable of juxtaposing in a single real place several spaces, several sites that are in themselves incompatible.”

Mediterotopia serves as an orientation tool aimed at conveying the complexity of the Mediterranean, uncovering the signs of the non-linearity of such a vast space, and conceiving new perspectives for coexistence through a reflection on information, politics, conflict, and education.

Alboran is the first and last island, both ending point and starting point, a crossroads, a link, an archive, and the voice of the Mediterranean. Malta is the meeting place for transnational dialogue and participation between Mediterranean cultures, the home of the Euromediterranean Parliament. The Buffer Zone in Cyprus, seen as a barrier from its two opposite sides, reveals itself as somewhere new, pluriversal, a laboratory of possibilities. Finally, the University comes to represent a traveling program with an intercultural horizon, open to all kinds of interaction; pontos, the sea as both the expanse and the journey.
