The new architectures located in proximity of the historical Diriyah and Wadi Hanifa areas in the east side of the city of Riyadh, have to respect a series of urban codes related to the land size, distances, proportions and heights, courtyards ratio, style and materials. From these assumptions, the project maximizes all the constraints turning them into potentials and investigating a series of typological conditions.
The brief requested a new building of maximum 2000m2 dedicated to the care, a small clinic and spa with different facilities that could also be a retreat offering spaces for leisure and relax inside out.
According to the site, which is approximately 40x40m, the footprint is extended to its maximum extension with a development on two storeys emphasizing the horizontality and the two main architectural elements of the slabs and shier walls; the wide occupation allows to erode the volume with patios and loggias which merge seamlessly with the interior spaces and outdoors. The design is developed on a square plan crossed by a sequence of concave-convex walls that define an inner core meant as a public void, and multiple private and intimate parterres which host the main functional areas. A patio occupies the centre, a rotated square that breaks the geometry and introduces a garden in continuity with the immersive public areas.
The unusual wall geometries define spaces with diverse configurations, yet a modularity is introduced in order to organize them according to the functional needs; a system of regular light partitions divides the areas allowing change and flexible adaptation without involving the permanent structure. The scheme implies no hierarchy and produces a fluid environment, a multi-layered space simultaneously hosting different activities, where all the parts look both onto the common area and the city.
